Thursday, February 27, 2014 - What Black History Month Means To Me

Dan Hope | February 27th, 2014

February is Black History Month in Canada and the USA.  For African Americans, this month is a time to reflect on the past and to remember the struggles that our people endured to get to where we are today.  When you mention Black History Month, many people automatically think of the political struggles that took place in the United States, but there are so many incredible individuals that paved the way for change on both sides of the border.

Although Alberta was still a largely unpopulated province in the 19 th  century, it still played a role in the struggle.  In the early 1900s, many African Americans relocated to Alberta seeking inexpensive farm land and an escape from the oppression of extreme anti-black groups in the South.  My great-grandfather, JD Edwards, was one of the first black settlers in Alberta.

He left Oklahoma for Canada is 1910.  He was only 21 years old when he arrived in Edmonton.  He walked a hundred miles north and established a homestead east of Athabasca.  Together with his wife Martha, they tackled the challenges of pioneer life in Canada.  They built a home and raised 10 children.  My great grandfather took pride in his Canadian citizenship and exercised his rights to become an important part of the community.  As the community grew, he became involved in local politics, a member of the school and hospital boards, and was a founding member of the Alberta Wheat Pool.

JD Edwards wasn't just an important trailblazer in my family, he was a recognized member of society.  He received an Achievement Award in Humanities from the Alberta government in 1973 for his contributions to organized sports, politics and his active role in community life.  He died in 1979 at the age of 90, but he will always be remembered as a proud Canadian who sought a better life and used his leadership abilities to give back to his community.  A film, titled A Farmer from Amber Valley, was created to tell his life story.
